Tradition & Modernity

Vicki Sullivan was the Third Prize Winner in International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 146 Still Life.

Vicki Sullivan is an Australian contemporary realist painter based on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. An Art Renewal Center (ARC) Living Master, her oil paintings are celebrated for their emotional depth and technical mastery. She excels in both still life and figurative art, and her work is held in collections worldwide, including the ARC Museum collection and the permanent collection of the State Library of New South Wales.

The Promise, oil on linen, 35½ x 23½ in.

Recent paintings like Pomegranates with Blue & White Vase demonstrate her skill in form, volume and color. “I’ve been painting pomegranates lately, drawn to their rich, warm reds and sculptural forms. There’s something magical about the moment they begin to crack open, like a signal from nature that they’re ready to eat,” she says. “Inside, the fruit reveals a hidden world of small, jewel-like arils that glisten like rubies, each one a tiny treasure. Their clustered gleam is both sensual and sacred, reminding me of ancient symbols and abundance. Capturing that moment in paint—when the outer skin yields and the inner beauty spills forth—is a joy. I paired them with my favorite blue and white vase, loving the contrast of deep reds against cool porcelain.”

Oranges with French Copper Jug, oil on linen, 30 x 23½ in.

Another recent still life, Oranges with French Copper Jug, features bright oranges contrasted against a complementary blue bowl and copper vessel. “I have a great appreciation for antiques, and this beautiful French copper jug must have quite a story,” the artist reflects. “I painted it directly from life with oranges fresh from my tree. I feel that my still life paintings capture a moment in time and invoke a feeling of calm in a busy world.”

Pomegranates with Blue & White Vase, oil on linen, 20 x 23½ in.

Sullivan has exhibited internationally at venues such as the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona and Sotheby’s in New York. Trained at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, her practice blends Renaissance tradition with modern sensibility. —
