Collectors purchase two paintings featured in American Art Collector from Susan Powell Fine Art
A preview of Summer in New England, a group show at Susan Powell Fine Art in Madison, Connecticut, ran in the July issue of American Art Collector. Two works, including Katie Swatland’s triptych August Moonset, and Alison Hill’s playful, contemporary piece Sunset Gulls, sold to happy collectors. “The buyer of Katie’s painting had an immediate visceral reaction and was mesmerized by the painting as if the painting cast a spell over him,” says gallery owner Susan Powell. “He was captivated by the light and peaceful mood with stars still shimmering above, the moon glowing softly and the first breath of dawn drifting across the dunes. It’s a glow you can feel, subtly shifting with each glance. He said, ‘I’ll never get tired of looking at this painting.’”

Ana Monteiro, Meditations, oil on linen, 23½ x 19½ in. Courtesy CK Contemporary, San Francisco, CA.
Belgian collector purchases work by Ana Monteiro ahead of a solo exhibition at CK Contemporary
Ana Monteiro is a figurative artist whose practice is a reflection upon the concept of the self, through an aesthetic that is shaped around the idea of symbolism and magical realism. The existential angst, and the infinite wonderful ways through which we try to root ourselves amid the great unknown, are a constant feature of her work. Gallery owner Lauren Ellis says, “Borrowing imagery from Bruegel’s painting The Fall of the Rebel Angels, this painting by Portuguese painter Ana Monteiro is a meditation on the restless mind. We were thrilled to find a Belgian collector for this piece as we prepare for our upcoming solo show for Monteiro.” The exhibition opens at CK Contemporary in San Francisco on October 25.
