Small Moments

33PA features miniature works in its April online show.

In 33 Contemporary’s latest online show, small works take center stage. Organized by curator Didi Menendez, the exhibition features a variety of miniature-sized artwork, all hovering around six inches or less. “I like to offer a selection of miniatures to our collectors who may want to purchase them to view in person the quality of the work an artist offers,” says Menendez. “Many collectors are unable to visit galleries so they research an artist they like and sometimes buy a smaller work to include in their collection. Also some collectors have run out of wall space but want to continue supporting the artists they admire.”

Artists in the show, which can be viewed online through Artsy.net, include Junyi Liu, Megan Elizabeth Read, Ellen Starr Lyon, Christa Forrest, Aixa Oliveras, Alexandra Telgmann and more.

“This small self-portrait continues my exploration of natural light effects—yhe bright winter light casting a shadow of a window pane across my face and illuminating one eye while leaving the other in shadow rimmed with warm reflected light,” Lyon says of her closely-cropped portrait that will be part of the upcoming show. “The expression is inward, perhaps a yearning for spring.”

In Read’s Study with Drop Cloth 3, a woman in a black leotard is depicted mid turn with her back to the viewer. Read creates a blurred effect to indicate that the subject is in motion. “At the most basic level, the tensions, contradictions and complexities of simply existing here [and] now often seem too big, too dissonant and too dreamlike for me to grasp. My attempts to paint them are my way to find an order in things and often lead to these layered portraits of multiple selves. Subjective snapshots, reflecting the inside out,” says the artist.

American-Iranian artist Pegah Samaie represents her newest series Women are Strong with her oil Woman Life Freedom, which depicts a woman cutting off her hair, an act often interpreted as a symbol of liberation. The series “represent[s] the impetus for her own introspection and discovery on what it means to be a woman in Middle Eastern culture,” Samaie explains.

Another self-portrait in the exhibition is Telgmann’s Golden Ocean Reflection - Discovery - Self Portrait. “My art captures the ocean’s beauty and fragility, blending light, movement and underwater reflections to inspire a deeper connection with our planet and a call to protect its marine life,” she says.
