Keeping it Real

The American Artists Professional League presents the 3rd annual Realism on the Hudson.

Returning to the historic Howland Cultural Center in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley, is American Artists Professional League’s 3rd annual Realism on the Hudsonexhibition. The small works show will feature roughly 100 representational paintings by top tier AAPL member artists from around the country.

Deborah Gersony, Winter Walk, oil, 12 x 12"

“One of the show’s unique features is that collectors can take home their purchases immediately, a good option for tourists and visitors passing through,” says AAPL president Aki Kano. “The exhibition has become a highlight and a main fine art event…in Beacon, New York, a vibrant and dynamic small city that attracts art lovers. Visitors to the show have been impressed by the exceptional quality and beauty of the works on display, and each year numerous artists have successfully sold their work to happy collectors.”

Jodie Kain, …and the boat made three, pastel, 18 x 12"

Collectors can find pieces across a wide range of subject matter and mediums, among them Deborah Gersony’s oil painting Winter Walk, which captures the quiet stillness after a Vermont snowfall. “I wanted to convey the feeling of heavy snow weighing down branches and softening the landscape,” Gersony explains. “The scene appealed to me because of the contrast between the cool blues and lavenders in the snow, and the yellow ochre glow at the end of the path.”

A monochromatic pastel, Adam, by Joel Sobelson will also be among the show’s offerings. “I strive to create art that is original and unexpected in content while using a pastel technique that I’ve been developing over the years,” says Sobelson. “For me, good art is about how you draw (technique) but really interesting art is what you draw (content). Original content is so important for me. That’s why I chose to draw a figure in this pose…totally unique, curious, yet eye catching.”

Christoper Forrest, Snowy Landing, oil on RayMar Arches oil paper panel, 16 x 12"

Jodie Kain offers her piece …and the boat made three, a scene inspired by the waters of Maine. “We encountered this pair of sailors heading back to port after a perfect day with an even wind,” shares Kain. “The lowering sun was reflected in the sails, and the calm created by the three actors (captain, reclining first mate and the gliding sloop) was a moment I had to capture in pastel.”

Christopher Forrest lives on a coastal island sandwiched between the ocean and a marshy bay, a beloved respite for birds on their migratory journeys. Forrest says, “With Snowy Landing, I tried to capture this environment with some of my favorite things to paint (a snowy egret) landing on weathered, mossy wood among marsh grasses.”

Joel Sobelson, Adam, pastel, 16 x 10"

Realism on the Hudson opens with a reception on March 1 from 1 to 3 p.m., an opportunity to meet the artists, mingle with fellow art lovers and be the first to take home an original work of art from the show. On March 22, AAPL Signature Member Brian McClear will lead a still life painting demonstration. The show runs through April 13. For  those unable to attend in person, works in the exhibition can also be viewed and purchased online at www.aaplinc.org. —
