Jacqueline Chanda

Jacqueline Chanda’s art journey began as a child and continued through high school and college. After earning a degree in drawing and painting from the University of California, Los Angeles, Chanda went to Paris, France, to further her art studies at several prestigious academies.

After a 28-year career as an academic and arts administrator, Chandra has decided to return to her art and is now a full time artist living in Tucson, Arizona. “I am a representational artist who likes to paint most anything; animals, landscapes, etc.,” says Chanda, “but I am most passionate and inspired by people. I love to create genre paintings—scenes of everyday life portraying ordinary people engaged in common activities.”

Chanda derives the subject matter for her paintings from places she has visited and lived. “They are narratives of my past and present,” she says. “I love catching people in candid, unscripted poses, like snapshots of life.” Chanda is particularly drawn to street and café scenes. “It is in these environments that I am able to observe the thoughtful attitudes that are conveyed by the human form, whether body gestures or facial expressions,” she continues. “Capturing the expressive character connected to a scene of people can be quite elusive, but it is the challenge that drives my work, and gives me great satisfaction when I succeed.”

Chanda’s work will be showcased in the exhibition Visions and Sounds: An African American Experience at the Sedona Art Center, in Sedona, Arizona, from February 7 through February 29, 2025. —
