Highlights of the sales and connections achieved from the pages of American Art Collector

Benji Alexander Palus, Icon, oil on canvas, 36 x 24". Courtesy 33PA.

33PA continues to sell works in their online group shows covered in American Art Collector
Benji Alexander Palus’ painting Icon, featuring a nude, heavily tattooed woman, was featured in the May issue of American Art Collector in a preview of 33PA’s themed group show Botanical Visions. The show was hosted by the online platform Artsy.net, and Palus’ painting quickly sold to a new collector. Of his process, Palus says, “My work is a life-long study of feminine strength and beauty, experienced through the bonds of close friendship. I work exclusively with a small group of friends who embody the qualities I most admire—passion, courage, wisdom, independence, kindness, vulnerability, resilience—all tempered but not destroyed by deep suffering.”

Vicki Sullivan, Tide is Out, oil on linen, 8 x 10".  Courtesy 33PA.

Vicki Sullivan’s piece Tide is Out was also featured in an online 33PA show organized around the theme of water. Covered in the January issue, not only did Sullivan sell one of her plein air seascapes but two, to the same American buyer. “It was such a thrill to sell both pieces as I had not put my plein air paintings for sale before, as I paint them just for feeding my soul,” says the Australian artist, adding that she usually paints portraits and still lifes. “Tide is Out is a painting I did on site at a beach where my father and grandfather used to fish off the rocks. Lately I’ve been revisiting every bay and cove of my youth and setting up my easel to paint. It’s an amazing, exhilarating feeling for me and I feel like each plein air painting captures some of the essence of the day.”

Commenting on our coverage, 33PA curator Didi Menendez says, “American Art Collector has been a godsend this year for us, reaching new collectors for our artists working in figurative and contemporary realism.”—

Susan Powell Fine Art sells piece by Timothy Rees featured in the July  issue

Gallery owner Susan Powell was pleased to share that a figurative work by Timothy Rees, who won the First Place Painting award in the Portrait Society of America’s 2024 International competition, sold after being featured in a preview of the gallery’s Summer in New England show in the July issue. Evening Mosey features Rees’ young son out for a stroll on the beach at sunset. Powell relates, “A longtime collector from Alexandria, Virginia, admired Evening Mosey for several months as it reminded her of her son when he was young and free and moseying on the beach. She loved watching him get into the groove at the beach on family vacations. When she opened the magazine, she couldn’t resist getting the painting for her 70th birthday in July, and immediately picked up the phone and called me to purchase it!”

Rehs Contemporary sells classic still life by Todd M. Casey
“We recently had the pleasure of selling Todd M. Casey’s captivating piece, Brass Pot and Mandarins, says gallery vice president Alyssa Rehs. “Todd, who has been a cherished part of our gallery for over a decade, is not only an accomplished artist but also a dedicated painting instructor. To enrich his students’ experience, he organized a special trip to New York City, where they had the opportunity to explore renowned museums and immerse themselves in the city’s vibrant art scene. “During their journey, Todd and his students made a stop at our gallery,” continues Rehs. “As they meandered through the space, Brass Pot and Mandarins caught the eye of one of his students. The piece resonated deeply with her, and she knew instantly that it belonged in her collection.

“Thus, Brass Pot and Mandarins has embarked on an extraordinary journey of its own, leaving the bustling art scene of NYC and traveling over 10,000 miles to find its new home in South Australia. It’s always rewarding to see art transcend boundaries and bring joy to new corners of the world.”  —
