Personal Poetry

Fernando Cidoncha’s thoughtful paintings have their US debut at Arcadia Contemporary

Fernando Cidoncha was born in Spain and studied at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, as well as the University of Granada, before moving to Florence, Italy, to pursue artistic training. As an artist, Cidoncha is interested in the exploration of the human form, using a figurative and representational language with the belief that art can unlock the yearning of the human heart and awake the desire to know, to love and to reach for the “Beyond.”

Golden Hour Dance, oil on panel, 39 x 48"

“My work is primarily motivated by personal introspection and my interest in spirituality,” says the artist. “I enjoy the process of creating and exploring different traditions of sacred art throughout history. The city of Florence, where I live, is also a continual source of inspiration for me. Additionally, I am inspired by nature, symbols, the unconscious and the world of dreams. I combine all these elements to create my personal poetry. I also try to present an alternative representation of masculinity, based on my personal experience, reflecting on its various facets.”

Field of Thoughts, oil on panel, 31½ x 23½"

His painting Field of Thoughts depicts three men engaged in a shared contemplative moment in nature. One figure holds an open book, suggesting a pause for reflection and the exchange of ideas. “The scene embodies an introspective dialogue and the beauty of thoughtful interaction,” says Cidoncha.

Revelation, oil on panel, 42 x 48"

Golden Hour Dance is a more dynamic and celebratory scene showing five figures holding hands in an almost ritualistic, circular dance during the soft glow of dawn or dusk. One of them, seems "other," from elsewhere to bring news or wisdom to the earthlings.

“I hope my paintings invite viewers to pause and contemplate, finding a sense of peace and introspection,” says Cidoncha. “Through the use of golden backgrounds and serene figures, I wish to create a sacred atmosphere that encourages contemplation and a deeper appreciation of the beauty within, and around us. I would like the viewers to connect with the spiritual and emotional layers of the work.”

The Nature of Conversation, oil on panel, 35 x 48"

The artist is having his very first U.S. exhibition, Fernando Cidoncha: New Paintings, at Arcadia Contemporary from September 26 through October 13. —
