Paper is one of the most versatile mediums, applicable to sculpture, collage, prints and mixed media. It’s also the most common and popular surface for an endless variety of drawing and painting mediums, from charcoal and graphite, to watercolors, gouache, pastels and more.
Collectors will have the opportunity to explore the limitless potential of paper at the 10th annual Art on Paperfair, taking place September 5 through 8, at the lower Manhattan waterfront venue Pier 36.

More than 100 galleries will have booths at Art on Paper, staged at a spacious, modern event space at Pier 36 in New York City.
“Paper is a unique and popular medium for several reasons,” says fair director Kelly Freeman. “For artists, it offers unparalleled versatility and accessibility. It can be manipulated in countless ways—folded, cut, layered or sculpted—allowing for endless creative possibilities. Its tactile quality and ability to hold various media, from pencil and ink to paint and collage, make it a favorite among artists exploring different styles and techniques. For collectors, paper artworks often present a really interesting and sometimes more approachable entry point into the art world,” Freeman continues. “The intimacy and immediacy of paper pieces also create a personal connection, making them cherished additions to any collection. The inherent fragility and ephemerality of paper add a layer of significance and urgency to preserving and appreciating these works.”

This year’s event features 100 local, national and international galleries, as well as a robust lineup of special programming and performances, interactive experiences, live demos and guided tours that provide deeper insights into the artworks and creative processes.
Two highlights are the Booksmart Fair, a collaboration with the Center for Book Arts that brings together an array of vendors specializing in artist books and fine prints; and a live printmaking studio courtesy of Shoe String Press.
There will also be several public projects, including an installation by celebrated abstract artist Elise Ferguson in collaboration with Kingsland Editions.

“Art on Paper is unique because it exclusively celebrates paper as a versatile and dynamic medium,” adds Freeman. “This focus allows for a diverse range of artworks, from intricate drawings and delicate sculptures to larger innovative installations. The fair brings together renowned artists and emerging talents, providing a platform for discovering new and exciting works. Additionally, Art on Paper’s curated environment fosters meaningful interactions between artists, collectors and enthusiasts, creating a vibrant community atmosphere. This show offers a rare opportunity to explore the boundless possibilities of paper art, making it a must-visit event for anyone passionate about contemporary art.”
