A Sense of Serenity

An upcoming exhibition at George Billis Gallery will showcase new paintings and monotypes by Missy Savard

Artist Missy Savard’s soft, subdued paintings depict the architecture and landscapes of the Eastern Seaboard, New England and Europe. Focusing on a strong sense of lighting and composition, the artist captures a unique sense of serenity in her work. An upcoming exhibition at George Billis Gallery in Fairfield, Connecticut, will showcase new paintings and monotypes by Savard that are specifically drawn from the stillness and calm of coastlines and river valleys. The show, titled A Sense of Place, opens August 28 and hangs through September 28.

“I also find subject matter in architectural gems that have withstood the test of time,” says Savard. “The placid perspectives invite viewers to seek peace and refuge, and the buildings speak from mute observations imbued over many years. In both subjects, I strive to share a silence that invites reflective contemplation. I look at my paintings as meditations, hoping that when people see them they are transported to a place that is familiar and easy for them,” she says.

Island Office, oil on linen, 10 x 10"

Savard primarily paints on location, deeply connecting with her surroundings. “Direct observation allows me to translate the light and color of a particular location as I try to capture a specific point in time,” says the artist. “The angle of the light, time of day, temperature and even humidity help to inform my painting. I am looking for an authentic representation to express the spirit and essence of the moment and work to distill the complexities of being outside to something that can articulate a feeling of calm.”

La Lumiere du Soir, oil and wax on board, 20 x 24"

Savard is influenced by great historic tonalists like George Inness and James McNeill Whistler. “I connect with the temperature of the day to create a diffused light, sending the eye around the canvas. How I choose to handle the light of a particular time is what determines the values and ultimately the subtlety or the sharpness of the hues that I choose,” she says. The artist uses cold wax medium mixed with oils, allowing for a layer of transparency and translucency that helps keep the edges of objects less sharp. “The wax allows for a looser technique and lends an extra, not expected hand—a bit of freedom and leeway that I appreciate.”

Inlet, oil on linen, 24 x 30"

She continues, “Growing up in a family of artists, I find inspiration in [the paintings of Inness and Whistler]. I love George Inness’ quote, ‘The purpose of the painter is simply…to awaken an emotion.’” —
