The California Art Club’s annual Gold Medal Exhibition showcases the very best in contemporary California impressionism.
Hosted by the California Art Club (CAC), the 113th Annual Gold Medal Exhibitionbegins this August at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University. The highly-anticipated event presents nearly 180 works by 165 artists working in a wide range of subject matter including cityscapes, nature scenes, figurative art, still lifes and more—all created utilizing the techniques of CAC founders who were instrumental in influencing the rise of California impressionism. Established in 1909, the California Art Club is recognized as one of the oldest, largest and most active leading professional art organizations in the world.

“As a member of the jury for the Gold Medal Exhibition, I am looking forward to the public’s reaction to all those wonderful works of paintings and sculptures that will be on display,” says art historian Jean Stern. “There will be many standout works, and sadly, there would have been many more if we only had the space for display. It’s an amazing group of artists! It literally took all day to jury the applicants, there were so many.”

Among the many talented artists in this year’s exhibition are Béla Bácsi, Patricia McGeeney, Charles Muench, Andrea Mosley, Scott W. Prior and Rita Pacheco, to name just a few.
This year also marks the third time that the California Art Club and the Hilbert Museum are partnering to put the event together. And the museum itself, located in Orange, California, is the perfect location for such a grand event, having just reopened this February after a three-year expansion project. “The California Art Club is honored that our signature exhibition will be on display at the Hilbert Museum as it celebrates its major expansion, as both organizations share a commitment to shining the spotlight on the rich history of California art,” says CAC president and Gold Medal artist Michael Obermeyer.
The show is also purposely without a theme so that participating artists have the freedom to create their most important artworks without any restrictions.

The Gold Medal Exhibition opens August 20 and runs through October 26. A variety of programs and events will also be offered alongside the exhibition, allowing collectors and attendees to meet directly with the artists. A Collectors Preview and Artists Reception will be held Sunday, August 18; a lecture on California impressionism by Stern takes place Saturday, August 24; and a Paint/Sculpt-Out will be held on the very last day of the show.
