Beautiful Blooms

Tatjana Chechun was the Second Prize Winner in International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 138, Still Life.

Lithuanian artist Tatjana Chechun paints gorgeous still lifes that capture the vibrant colors and crispness of her floral subject matter. Working with oils, Chechun strives to capture a sense of realism in her work, choosing to depict the beauty of nature as she observes it. “In my painting you can see the world through my eyes, colors and emotions,” she says. “My life is painting.” Chechun adds that she was born into a family of artists and has been drawing since childhood.

Several of her most recent paintings provide excellent examples of the range of palettes the artist works in—Always together features a primarily blue theme, while Mallow and Peonies and scissors capture bright, brilliant pinks. Sunflowers in a basket depicts the quintessential sunny golden flowers in a wicker basket amongst several apples spread across a table.

“Sunflowers are my favorite flowers,” says Chechun. “Did you know that not all sunflowers are yellow? There are over 60 varieties of sunflowers worldwide, some of which have reddish petals or shades of brown and orange, but I love the most common yellow ones.”

She discusses the inspiration behind Always together, coming from old traditions from a few hundred years ago. “In the 19th century, the symbolism of flowers gave rise to a peculiar phenomenon…called ‘floral flirting,’” says the artist. “Before [an] engagement, a girl could only be presented with violets, lily of the valley and forget-me-nots. A bouquet of May lilies in the language of flowers meant ‘I have long and secretly loved you.’”
