Anne Neilson Fine Art sells abstracted landscape by painter Christopher Groves
Chris Groves’ love of art grew from his early experiences with nature in Louisiana and Colorado, and the introduction of a master sculpture in his youth. His piece Morning Haze was featured in a solo exhibition at Anne Neilson Fine Art in Charlotte, North Carolina, and was integrated into another area of the gallery after the show. “When a client walked in on a busy Saturday, he knew he couldn’t leave the gallery without it,” says gallery director Logan Sutton. “The lush landscape by Christopher Groves is serene in palette and captures almost a dreamlike glow. Enamored by the beautifully rendered light, the client collected it on the spot to be the centerpiece of their dining room.”

Another piece in 33 Contemporary’s themed Artsy exhibitions sells after being featured in American Art Collector
33 Contemporary is seeing great success in selling pieces through the online exhibition platform Artsy. Artists Painting Artists, on view through March 2, had a unique premise—a talented roster of artists were tasked with painting each other, giving them a chance to “learn about each other’s work and start new friendships,” says show curator Didi Menendez. The piece that sold, shortly after the work was featured in American Art Collector, was a portrait of Laurence O’Toole by Amy Gibson. “It was a little nerve-racking painting a fellow artist, especially one that you admire,” Gibson shares. “With him living in Ireland and myself in the states, we both had to rely on each other to take photos of ourselves to work from. We sent ideas to each other of what we were aiming for.” Of Portrait of Laurence, Gibson says “he exuded a distinct air of contemplation in his references that I wanted to capture. Being from another country, he automatically has a mysterious side to him. After I received the photo references back, I thought he looked like a philosopher or even a monk. I wanted to convey the philosophical essence that he was giving off in his photos and also what he infuses into his artwork.”

Works by J Louis are hot commodities at Principle Gallery
“We held J Louis’ solo exhibition in September 2023 and had an array of stellar works in the show,” shares gallery assistant director Taylor Chauncey. One of the most noted works was titled Green and was featured in American Art Collector’s preview of the show. “It sold before the show opened,” continues Chauncey. “We had so many collectors interested in that painting, but it could only belong to one. After the show, we were informed of a commission request for a painting in the same vein as Green. By December, Louis had completed this gorgeous work titled Chartreuse for a collector in Berlin, Germany. His work is a perfect blend of femininity, strength and power. The models confidently gaze into the souls of viewers with their soft yet commanding demeanors. I love that Louis’ portrayal goes beyond just a woman’s beauty—they’re also shown as edgy and elegant.” —
