Art Around the Hearth

Canyon Road art galleries host a festive evening of intimate artist talks during the annual Fireside Chat Series

The holidays are a magical time in Santa Fe, with the city dressed up in twinkling lights, dusted in snow and illuminated by the warm glow of farolitos lining the streets and rooftops. Art lovers can find this holiday spirit on full display during a special evening hosted by the galleries along historic Canyon Road, one of the city’s most concentrated art hubs.

Celebrate the unique holiday spirit of Northern New Mexico with farolitos and bonfires, storytelling and art.

On Friday, December 1 from 4 to 6 p.m., bundle up and walk from gallery to gallery along candlelit streets to enjoy intimate artists talks before crackling courtyard fires, with live music, refreshments and, of course, a bounty of art in a wide variety of mediums and styles.

To highlight just a few of the gallery events, Susan Eddings Pérez Gallery will have live music and feature contemporary artists Alison Hixon, Sue Llewellyn and Susan Eddings Pérez. At Winterowd Fine Art, glass artist Willi Haye will be on hand to visit with the public and to give a demonstration of her process. The event coincides with the opening of Haye’s solo exhibition at Winterowd that runs through December 10.

In their charming courtyard, Canyon Road Contemporary Art’s festivities will include a bonfire, farolitos, music and artists Gina Rossi, Kari Rives and jewelry designer Cameron Johnson.

Canyon Road Galleries host festive fireside chats with select artists. Last year’s featured artist Ed Sandoval is pictured here in the courtyard Canyon Road Contemporary Gallery.

Artist Susan Holmes will be at Karina on Canyon from 3 to 6 p.m. showcasing pieces from her fashion brand Love Dove, including one-of-a-kind embellished denim and camo jackets and unique purses. At Dominique Boisjoli Fine Art strollers can warm up around the fire with artists Sandra Preston, Terrell Powell, Dominique Boisjoli and Mark White. Kay Contemporary will feature abstract watercolorist Susan Pasquarelli and glass artist Steve Hagan.

The event is one of many hosted along Canyon Road to celebrate and uphold the neighborhood’s creative legacy, and foster relationships between artists and the public. “The setting is decidedly non-commercial as it focuses on the human connection,” says Nancy Ouimet, owner of Canyon Road Contemporary Art. “The first Friday of December is the perfect time to celebrate the unique holiday spirit of Northern New Mexico with farolitos and bonfires, as well as good storytelling and great art.”  —
