Women Artists of the West
On July 22, Women Artists of the West kicked off its 53rd annual national exhibition at the Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton, Kansas. The show, titled No Place Like Home, marked a stunning return for the prominent art group, which celebrates women artists all around the country. The top award went to Ashwini Bharathula for her portrait Chuck. Other award winners included Patricia Ridge Bradley, Jan De Lipsey and Cecy Turner. Two other winners were Linghui Wang, who won the American Art Collector Award of Excellence, and Debra Keirce, who won the Western Art Collector Editor’s Choice Award, from this magazine’s sister publication Western Art Collector. Leading the Women Artists of the West are co-presidents Mejo Okon and Amy Evans, as well as vice president Brenda Morgan.

Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out
Santa Fe, New Mexico, will welcome the fall season to the City Different during the Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out on October 20 and 21. The event will take place on the historic Canyon Road, a three-quarter-mile thoroughfare not far from Downtown Santa Fe, which features dozens of art galleries. Every year, this is one of the highlights of the season as artists lend their energy and enthusiasm to the road while creating new works of art. It is a wonderful opportunity for artists and appreciators to mix together, learn from each other, and enjoy beautiful Canyon Road. The celebration begins October 20 with evening receptions at many participating galleries. The following day, October 21 is the main event, with artist demonstrations and other activities at many of the galleries along Canyon Road. Artists will be out from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., many of them painting in courtyards, porches and inside the galleries. New Leadership at A Sense of Place Gallery
A Sense of Place Gallery in Fresno, California, transitioned to new ownership on August 26, with Kristen Boroski leading the gallery. Boroski is excited to connect art patrons to the passion and dedication of the gallery’s artists and their original work. The gallery features oil and pastel paintings as well as glass, wood and ceramic art and jewelry, and also features solo and collaborative exhibitions and hosts workshops by the nation’s leading artists. This November 1 to 22, A Sense of Place Gallery is hosting a solo show of works by Daniel Keys titled Oeuvre, a landmark exhibition featuring his masterful work in oil and pastel. Keys’ art is available for sale on the gallery’s website. In addition, he will be teaching a workshop from November 9 to 11 at the gallery. Nelson-Atkins Museum Acquires Khalif Tahir Thompson Painting
A major painting by Khalif Tahir Thompson, a rising star among emerging Black artists, was recently unveiled at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. The piece, titled Summertime, is a large-scale diptych recently created by the artist, and a promised gift of Kansas City collectors Christena and William Gautreaux. “We are thrilled to be able to feature a dramatic and beautiful work by an emerging artist, thanks to the foresight of our friends and supporters Bill and Christy Gautreaux,” says Julián Zugazagoitia, director and CEO of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. “Their commitment to a broader, more inclusive contemporary art history, one that foregrounds the contributions of Black and African American makers, aligns with the Nelson-Atkins’ values of inclusion, diversity, equity and access, and the increasing diversification of our contemporary art collections.”

Heather Horton Solo Show
Whimsy Pasadena in Old Town Pasadena, California, will host a solo exhibition of works by fine artist Heather Horton this fall. Immersion is a collection of autobiographical works by Horton incorporating magical realism that explore the tension between representational and emotive imagery. The exhibition features more than 30 oil paintings and will be on display from October 14 to 22. An opening reception takes place on Saturday, October 14, from 5 to 9 p.m. RSVP is required. Horton will be onsite painting various times throughout the week. —
