Principle Gallery sells work after show preview in Amerian Art Collector
Bombshell by Anthony Waichulis was included in a March exhibition at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia, titled Still Fresh. The group show was previewed in that month’s issue of American Art Collector. The piece was then purchased by one of Principle Gallery’s longtime clients and collectors as a birthday gift for her significant other. “He already owns one of Anthony’s paintings, so he was over the moon when he received this unforgettable present,” say assistant gallery director, Taylor Chauncey. “The world of Anthony Waichulis is one of nostalgia, humor and tranquility,” Chauncey continues. “His work Bombshell takes us back to a time when people enjoyed the little things and didn’t rush from one thing to another. It’s almost as if time is standing still in a moment of pure bliss.”
Kristen Campo Fine Art sells two still lifes by Sarah M. Paddock
Kristen Campo, owner of Kristen Campo Fine Art, met a soon-to-be client at a local charity event. The individual was new to the art world so Campo invited him to visit her Rochester, New York, art gallery. The client was nervous at first, but Campo set his mind at ease, encouraging him to simply enjoy exploring the art on display. “I could tell he wasn’t connecting to the abstract and pop art pieces, so I drew him Sarah M. Paddock’s paintings and his shy composure disappeared,” recalls Campo. “His eyes lit up and he instantly relaxed upon viewing Paddock’s Italian Kitchen, and exclaimed he had to have it.”
The collector, a Rochester business owner who chooses to remain anonymous, is an avid cook. The piece he bought depicts the Italian essentials—tomatoes, garlic, basil, oil and vinegar in corked glass decanters. “He loves making sauce so the painting rekindled the joy it brings him,” continues Campo. “He was fond of how realistically the tomatoes were rendered and became an instant collector.” A few weeks later he returned to Campo's gallery to purchase his second Paddock painting, Fresh Lemonade, a lovely scene of bright yellow lemons and tulips with accents of cobalt blue. The collector is patiently waiting to see a new Tuscan scene that Paddock, whose work has been featured many times in this magazine, is currently working on.
Collectors are drawn to Kathie Olivas’ painting at Haven Gallery
“My wife Nancy and I have always appreciated artists who have a penchant for the macabre,” shares Patrick Salerno about his decision to purchase Kathie Olivas’ piece Red Rabbit. “Additionally, we are always on the lookout for artist’s works that we feel are undervalued in the marketplace. When we spotted Kathie’s work in Haven Gallery in Northport, New York, we were immediately drawn to it. The surreal nature or her paintings and sculpture—her big-eyed, costumed, tantalizing subjects gaze through you as if they are looking into your soul and know the secrets you don’t wish to reveal.” The collector continues, “Her work is a mixture of Margaret Keane meets Chris Mars—but on a working man’s (or woman’s) budget. The character in Red Rabbit is the classic Olivas big-eyed girl with a provocative stare peeking out from a pestilence mask. We were immediately drawn to the subject’s shy, fearful nature and the sense of the danger that lies within. We love this painting and proudly display it in a prominent location in our den. Kudos to Kathie Olivas for her ability to provoke such emotion in her work.” —
