Surrounded by a family of successful fine artists, Jennifer Heine set out three decades ago to find her “own groove” by trying every medium and genre. “I found nothing as compelling and rewarding as painting some of the interesting characters I’ve met,” says Heine. “In the time I’ve shared the studio with these works and later, encountering them again as old friends, I find these paintings more than any other have new facets to discover and stories to whisper. I believe works which suggest stories invite speculation, continually renewing your engagement and adding to the enjoyment of a painting over time.
Shadow Limned, oil on linen, 24 x 18"“When out seeking inspiration I am looking to be arrested by the unique—a weathered face, full of character and history, a humble alley made unexpectedly beautiful by the way light strikes it,” she continues. “The narrative potential of portraits, however, continues to inspire many of my larger pieces. The subjects I favor are not typically courted for portraits in the grand style, but more often those found on the tenebrous edges of bustling urban life. I become engrossed in exploring the glorious idiosyncrasies that distinguish an individual.

Heine’s work will be featured in the Federation of Canadian Artists’ Annual International Representational Exhibition which runs August 14 through September 3, at Federation Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia. —
