Artist Focus

Artist Focus: David Kizziar

Moved by lighting, composition and his love for the techniques of the Old Masters, David Kizziar is inspired to create pieces which build from his natural artistic gift of portraying lifelike movement and capturing tonal values to give perspective.

Corona Del Mar, colored pencil on toned paper, 10½ x 13¾"

Having grown up on the California coast, it is not a surprise to see that much of Kizziar’s work has been inspired by the ocean. His original drawings in monochromatic colored pencil, graphite or ink can take more than 300 hours to complete with no room for mistakes. This summer, Kizziar is excited to share with his collectors an ancient technique used by the Renaissance Masters—the method of silverpoint drawing that dates back to the 12th-century. Using this historical method, Kizziar covers his drawing surfaces with a ground mineral coating mix...He then draws using solid sterling silver, gold or copper wire which leaves a deposit on the drawing surface, and overtime will oxidize into a beautiful tonal color.

Thousand Steps, colored pencil on toned paper, 10½ x 14"

Collectors are often are surprised by the gentleness and realistic interpretations of a subject that Kizziar creates, which makes them feel like they are right there in the moment as the artist himself was.

Kizziar’s work will be on display at Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach through September 1; at the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach through September 3; and at the Cloisters of St. Francis in Sorrento, Italy, from October 7 through October 14. —
