This enchanting area became an artist’s destination in 1905, when art students from The Art Institute of Chicago rebelled against the traditional practice of in-studio painting. Interested in the plein air movement, these artists were drawn to the scenic Kalamazoo River where they began teaching summer painting classes.

By 1914, their enthusiasm for outdoor painting had caught on across the region, necessitating their classes move to what eventually became known as the Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency. Now, Saugatuck/Douglas is home to numerous galleries, studios, exhibitions and public art installations, earning its distinction as the Art Coast of Michigan.

In the year 1923, renowned painter Carl Hoerman erected a building on the Art Coast of Michigan and called it the River Guild Gallery Center. Fifty years later, in 1973, Joyce Petter opened her own gallery and eventually moved it to that historical location. When asked if she ever imagined her gallery would be flourishing and growing in that same historical location half a century later, Petter, now 96, grins and says she enjoys watching her legacy continue.

J. Petter Galleries is thankful for the countless artists, collectors, designers and art lovers that have made the last 50 years so memorable. “Year after year our customers return to find something special. We know we are a destination for many, and we are honored to be a part of their lives,” says gallery owner and director Juli Petter, adding that they have even more to celebrate this year. “Dave and Jane Armstrong, owners of Armstrong De Graaf International Fine Art, asked us to continue their legacy as they finally retire,” she says. They agreed and J. Petter Galleries now have two new locations—a contemporary gallery in Saugatuck and a viewing room outside of Butch’s Drydock Restaurant in Holland.”
