Classic to Contemporary

The 68th annual Washington Winter Show offers an abundance of art, antiques and programming for collectors on the nuances of curating and design

Founded in 1954, the Washington Winter Show is the second oldest charitable art and antiques show in the United States. This year marks the show’s 68th annual edition and will feature more than 40 dealers from across the U.S. and Europe, offering a broad range of rare antiques and fine historical and contemporary arts.

The 2023 event will return to the Katzen Arts Center at American University in Washington, D.C. from January 13 through January 15. A special preview night kicks off the weekend on Thursday, January 12.Fernand Reynard, Trompe l’Oeil in the formal greenhouse at Oak Spring, north wall (1959-60), diluted oils on canvas mounted to wood, 102½ x 152¼".Oak Spring Garden Foundation, Upperville, Virginia. This year’s theme is “Curating: from Classic to Contemporary,” and the event has been designed to attract collectors of all genres and styles and inspire them to curate their collection for a variety of environments. The programming is filled with “master curators” who will share their secrets for showcasing collections in new and exciting ways.

Attendees can expect to find plenty of contemporary art among the antiques, jewelry and decorative arts. Among the exhibitors, who have works by significant living artists available for purchase, are dealers Guarisco Gallery, Garvey Rita Art Antiques, Carole Pinto Fine Arts and Trinity House.Patrons can expect to find a spectrum of fine art, antiques, jewelry and more at the highly anticipated Washington Winter Show.

In line with the theme of curating is the loan exhibit Bunny Mellon: Patron and Participant in the Creation of Art and Beauty. Presented by Oak Spring Garden Foundation, the former home and now museum of Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, one of American’s most well-known collectors and curators, the exhibit will highlight several of her creative projects, especially her partnership with the French trompe l’oeil artist Fernand Renard.

Friday morning, Ken Fulk, a member of Elle Décor’s A-List who is renowned for his masterful eye for design, will share tips on how to mix and arrange art and antiques in every setting.Craig Alan, Populus: Homage to Van Gogh, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 48". Courtesy of Guarisco Gallery.

On Saturday morning, a design panel led by style director of Frederic Magazine, Tori Mellott, will discuss on the essence of stylish interiors, authentic spaces and the art of design.

“The 2023 show was designed to have something for everyone, from serious collectors and designers to those who seek to learn how to incorporate a single family antique into a contemporary environment,” share event co-chairs Sarah Brennan and Daryl A. Muller. “At the core, this year’s show creates a platform to reimagine how antiques can be beautifully woven into our contemporary lives of today.”A special preview night kicks off this year’s Washington Winter Show on Thursday, January 12, at the Katzen Arts Center American University. For show hours, a detailed schedule of events and tickets visit www.washintonwintershow.org. —
