January 2023 Edition

Art Show / Fair Previews

Broad Appeal

FOG Design+Art lifts up the arts and cultural scene of San Francisco and beyond.

The ninth edition of FOG Design+Art takes place this January 19 to 22, featuring 48 galleries (in 45 booths) from all across the world. Every year, FOG brings art lovers from all walks of life together to experience an international roster of the top contemporary design and art galleries of the day. A Preview Gala kicks off the event on Wednesday January 18, benefitting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s education and exhibitions program.David Gill Gallery’s booth at last year’s FOG fair. FOG Design+Art is intimately scaled, a mix of vetted and respected gallerists from the worlds of both contemporary art and contemporary and 20th-century design; national and international; and from established to young/up and coming,” says Douglas Durkin, FOG Design+Art Steering committee member. “It is unique in the art fair ecosystem for these reasons, and so has broad appeal, not only for collectors, but enthusiasts as well. This curated experience, all under one roof, has proven to be a winning formula for close to ten years. And year after year, gallerists up their presentations to match up to the very curious, educated and sophisticated collector base in the Bay Area. FOG is a truly unique experience in the world of art and design fairs.”Paul Kremer, Siren 22, acrylic on canvas, 48 x 72". Courtesy Berggruen Gallery.

United States-based exhibitors at the 2023 fair include Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, Pace Gallery, David Zwirner, Gladstone Gallery, Fraenkel Gallery and many others. The event is held once again at the Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture in San Francisco, California.Brittney Leeanne Williams, A Passing Dance: Walking on Water, oil on canvas, 75 x 94".Courtesy the artist and Alexander Berggruen, NY. “There are always new and fabulous things at FOG, and this year is no exception,” says Susan Swig, FOG Design+Art Steering committee member and organizer of the FOG Talks programming series. “As we love to share the ‘mic’ with our greater San Francisco arts community, this year we will present a fabulous panel that will include directors of five arts institutions from around the Bay. We are honored that Chris Bedford from SFMOMA, Ali Gass from ICA San Francisco, Lori Fogarty from Oakland Museum of California, Veronica Roberts from the Cantor Museum at Stanford, and Monetta White from Museum of the African Diaspora, will participate together in a candid talk about hopes for their own institutions as well as from/for each other and their communities. I expect they also have some surprises for us up their sleeves. This will be good!”

FOG Design+Art is overseen by a steering committee of San Franciscans with a deep commitment to nurturing the arts and cultural fabric of the city. —
