Art for a Cause

Catalina Island Conservancy returns with it signature plein air event featuring an exclusive roster of nationally recognized artists.

One of California’s Channel Islands, Santa Catalina lies in the ocean southwest of Los Angeles, and is known for its abundant wildlife, tropical vegetation, outdoor recreation, blue-green coves and its highest peak, Mt. Orizaba. Part of an ongoing effort to protect the island’s natural and cultural heritage, Catalina Island Conservancy returns with its 12th annual Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show and Sale in its popular virtual and in-person format on Sunday, October 23. John Budicin, Lunch at the Airport, oil on linen, 9 x 14"

Held on the mainland at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, the afternoon event features 90 works by nine celebrated plein air painters that highlight the natural beauty of Catalina’s incredible wildlands as well as scenes from the island hubs of Avalon and Two Harbors. Aimee Erickson, Walking Back to Town, oil on canvas, 16 x 20"

This year’s artists are Cindy Baron, Carl Bretzke, John Budicin, Aimee Erickson, Terri Ford, Wyllis Heaton, Debra Huse, Shanna Kunz and Michael Obermeyer, all of whom visited in the spring to capture the island at its most vibrant. They will show both plein air pieces completed on site and works based on sketches and studies that were later finished in-studio.

“We are excited to present these varied views of Catalina Island created by our talented artists,” says Victoria Seaver Dean, Conservancy board member and event chair. “The Wild Side Art Show and Sale provides an opportunity for friends of Catalina to enjoy as well as take home one of these treasures while supporting the Conservancy’s conservation, education and recreation programs.”Carl Bretzke, White’s Landing Camp, oil on linen, 8 x 16"

Some of the proceeds from The Wild Side Art Show and Sale will help fund a permanent collection of plein air art that documents the Conservancy’s conservation efforts and progress in habitat restoration. A rotating exhibit of the paintings acquired during previous shows are currently on display for the public in the Conservancy’s Trailhead visitor center in Avalon.Michael Obermeyer, Avalon Overlook, oil on canvas, 10 x 12"

The event is open to the public from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. with priority access beginning at 1 p.m. Unsold paintings will remain available for purchase online for two weeks following the show. —
