On the Mornington Peninsula of Victoria, Australia, contemporary realist Vicki Sullivan is surrounded by the inspiration of the Southern Ocean on one side and Port Phillip Bay on the other. A life changing experience, she studied art in Italy at the Angel Academy of Art, where she learned the skills the Old Masters employed hundreds of years ago. “It was incredibly fulfilling and absorbing,” says the artist.

More recently, the Art Renewal Center awarded Sullivan the title of Living Master. Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Australia and, in the last few years, at the European Museum of Modern Art, the “MEAM” Museum, in Barcelona, Spain, among other prestigious shows.

One of her recent works, Hey Babe, Take a Walk on the Wild Side, she depicts a woman in a leopard print coat standing next to a goldfinch. “Every picture tells a story, and I was inspired to present the goldfinch in a modern setting,” she says of the piece. “I imagined the goldfinch in my story with a model who looks as if she may be a character from a Lou Reed song. I endeavored to expand the juxtaposition between Old Master and modern subject, utilizing bird and cat imagery to enhance the tension.”
Sullivan also works on a number of public portrait commissions, often of important public figures.
“Life is short,” she says, “so make the most of every day and find a way to follow your dream.” —
