Summer Days

Susan Powell Fine Art presents new works by 25 nationally-acclaimed artists during its Summer in New England show.

One of Susan Powell Fine Art’s most popular exhibitions returns for its 19th year. Summer in New England features 25 superb artists who depict seascapes and landscapes of idyllic New England. From marshlands and shorelines to blissful harbors and vessels on the open water, these scenes capture the region’s unique coastal charm.

“The paintings in the show capture the unique light and atmosphere of the shoreline and invite viewers to breathe in the magical moments of summer,” says gallery owner Susan Powell.Leonard Mizerek,  Dusk at the Wharf, oil, 14 x 18"

Among the artists participating in the 2022 exhibition—working in styles ranging  from traditional realism and impressionism to contemporary—include Paul Beebe, Peter Bergeron, Zufar Bikbov, David Dunlop, Neal Hughes, Andrew Lattimore, Anne McGrory, Deborah Quinn-Munson, Dennis Sheehan and George Van Hook.

A quintessential snapshot of summer, we see beach-goers lounging under their umbrellas in the sand in Tom Hughes’ Beach Day. “I was visiting Nantucket with friends, painting most of the time. But we did go to the beach one day, and I was as restless as I always get at the beach, but luckily had brought a sketchbook with me. I sketched the people around me and I took a few photos, both sources that I used for the painting,” he says. “The really fascinating part for me was the characteristic hazy sky—cloudless but not really blue–contrasted with the blazing sand and the bright colors of the towels, chairs and toys.”Tom Hughes,  Beach Day, oil, 18 x 24"

Del-Bourree Bach’s pastoral scene Afternoon Parade pulls viewers into a bright and inviting field of grazing cattle. “A warm summer afternoon, cows heading off over the ridge, what’s on the other side? Another pasture and a new adventure or back to the barn for the night? It is a peaceful and inspiring scene for me to paint, but, as I often do, I’ll leave the answers up to the viewer,” says the artist. Andrew Lattimore,  Road to Sachem Pond on Block Island, oil, 11 x 14"

Dusk at the Wharf, by Leonard Mizerek, was painted on site in Rockport, Massachusetts. The artist recalls the experience: “I painted across the harbor when the lighting offered a luminous softness, which affected both the sky and the water. This atmospheric effect is what attracted me to that spot, giving everything a soft veil of mist. I wanted a different view of one of America’s most painted places.”Del-Bourree Bach,  Afternoon Parade, acrylic, 13 x 15½"

Award-winning artist and American Society of Marine Artists member  Jeanne Rosier Smith will be conducting a pastel painting demonstration of one of her seascapes in the gallery garden from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday July 16. The exhibition runs June 24 through September 5.  —
