On the cover: Yana Movchan

Painter Yana Movchan has had three covers of American Art Collector—March 2012, January 2017 and July 2021—and each are representative of Movchan’s unmistakable still life style. Her paintings are bursting with vibrant color, hidden little treasures and inviting compositional elements.Sound Organizer, oil on canvas, 2022, 40 x 40"These kinds of still life paintings, particularly floral still lifes, have a rich history within the art world, going back hundreds of years to Dutch painters and even before them. But Movchan enlivens the genre by creating contemporary views of these classic subjects. Her January 2017 cover is especially revealing: the petals have soft edges and gentle curves without a sharp edge in the whole painting, the clear bowl adds a depth to the interior of the arrangement and the birds seem to pose, as if they know they are being watched by the viewer. It’s a masterful painting, and speaks to why Movchan has been chosen for multiple covers. “It was always a very exciting moment to see my personal art on the cover of Art Collector,” Movchan says. “It gives you great feelings of recognition and personal satisfaction that you did a good job. I think it is a very big deal for every artist. I think it is also affecting customers in the right way. I’m very grateful for every cover I had and hoping for many more!” —
