Artist Focus

Artist Focus: BF Reed

“We are not all impressionists, nor should we be. I, for one, delight in the details,” says artist BF Reed. Like many others, Reed is intrigued by light and takes pleasure in seeing how light defines form. “I marvel at how...light...allows us to take a flat surface and make the viewer experience depth and distance. I mostly love how, with enough light, the details emerge.”Spheres, 2, pastel, 27 x 19"

Her studio has no natural light, so she has all manner of full spectrum, daylight, fluorescent, LED and incandescent light to illuminate and reveal all of the wonderful details. Reed works in soft pastels to create her still life paintings that are known for their crispness and clarity. She also works painstakingly slowly to observe the light and describe the nuances that just slight differences in angles of light can create. It’s Always Sunny, pastel, 27 x 19"

“I begin these still life setups outside in the full sun. I sketch and photograph these arrangements with thoughts of taking full advantage of light, direction and shadows,” says Reed. “Then, armed with detailed information from my sketches and photos, I climb up to my studio that is lit up like Broadway and delightfully hunt for the—you guessed it—details!”Reflection with Strawberry, pastel, 16 x 20"

Reed is represented by New Elements Gallery and Water + Color Gallery in Wilmington, North Carolina, and Mattie King Davis Art Gallery in Beaufort, North Carolina. She will have a spotlight at Bev's Gallery in Raleigh this February. A solo exhibition for Reed takes place at New Elements Gallery opening June 24. —
