Tenaya Sims and Christopher Remmers are coming together for their first duo exhibition at Abend Gallery in Denver. A blending of their shared passion for narrative paintings with mythological themes, the show has been titled Evolving the Myth: Portals of Perception. Featured will be new ethereal paintings by both Sims and Remmers that depict the grace and form of the human body. The paintings feel as though they were meant to be shown side by side.

“Portals of Perception is approaching painting as an alchemical process—much like the Tarot, composing the base ingredients of matter as a symbol for the viewer to meditate upon. These elements create portals into our psyche and perhaps the greater collective view of humanity, both consciously or not,” says Remmers. “From a technical/compositional perspective, these paintings explore the space between realism and abstraction and use human form and light as symbols.” Remmers adds that these bodies of work initiate a dialog surrounding our relationship to the natural world, “illuminating a portal into a new perception of reality.”

Sims founded the program for imaginative, classical realism at Georgetown Atelier, and this is partially the reason Remmers studied there. He says. “Tenaya helped me bridge the gap from the technicals of classical painting and drawing into developing a portfolio for large-scale narrative painting. After I graduated [from] the program and began teaching, [we] quickly found that we had common threads of interest in our work and began to imagine an exciting vision of how we could work together.”

Sims adds, “During his three years of study, [Christopher] not only set new standards in the program, but also became a cornerstone of the community, instructor in the program and good friend of mine. Since then, our friendship and artistic synergy has only grown stronger, and I’ve surely learned as much from him as he has from me.”
Evolving the Myth: Portals of Perception will be on view February 25 to March 19. —
