Mississippi Museum of Art acquisitions
The Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson has recently acquired works by contemporary artists Kristen Dorsey, Ruth Miller and Charles Edward Williams. Dorsey’s Blood Bling is an intricate necklace that contains an etched representation of a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card issued by the U.S. government’s Bureau of Indian Affairs; Miller’s The Evocation and Capture of Aphrodite is a hand-stitched embroidered tapestry; and Williams’ multimedia installation—featuring oils, film and sound—investigates current and historical cultural events related to racism and suggestive stereotypes formed within individuals.

Giant origami sculptures
An exhibition running on Broadway in New York features seven large-scale metal origami sculptures by American sculptor and designer Gerardo Hacer. Known for his bold, origami-inspired sculptures, Hacer’s exhibition Transformation places brightly colored animals along the city’s iconic street to provide onlookers with more joy and color in their lives. The installations will remain on view through November 23.

Imaginative worlds
Artist Julie Alpert’s whimsical, creative world comes to life in an upcoming exhibition at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. The site-specific installation, Altars, Keepsakes, Squiggles, and Bows is an immersive exhibition in which Alpert transforms a section of the museum’s Contemporary Art Gallery “into a spectacle of pattern, color and shapes like bows, drips, roses, hearts, hashtags and jazz hands using painted wood, collage and modified household objects.” The show runs through February 21, 2022.

Into the Arctic
A comprehensive book, titled Into the Arctic: Painting Canada’s Changing North, by Canadian painter and multifaceted artist Cory Trépanier dives into the stunning mystique of the Arctic. The artist journeyed five times into the frigid land between 2006 and 2018, ultimately producing more than 120 paintings (as well as several dozen sketches and photos that document both the process and adventure behind the works) that are included in the publication. The book is set to be released in mid-October. —
