Love Story

Meyer Vogl Gallery spreads the love in a group exhibition of talented artists.

Beginning June 4, Meyer Vogl Gallery features the work of five artists who attempt to bring back a little shine to our faces, and put a little love in our hearts. Anne Blair Brown, Diane Eugster, Kathleen Jones, Laurie Meyer and Carlos San Millán, have each created paintings for the show, titled Love Story, where they “each pay homage to one subject they keep coming back to. Something that lights a little fire inside every time they paint it; their own personal love story.”Diane Eugster, Keepin’ it Real, oil on canvas, 30 x 24"

“It’s been a year of loss, heartache and anger, but at the same time, it’s been a year of renewed devotion to the things that matter most to us,” says Meyer Vogl Gallery director and co-owner Katie Geer. “With Love Story, we wanted to, simply enough, put some love out into the world. Each artist was asked to share their own personal ‘love story’ from their studio.”Laurie Meyer, Morning Has Broken, oil on linen, 36 x 36"

Meyer, who also is a co-owner to the gallery, will showcase her piece Morning Has Broken, a slightly abstracted view of a gorgeous smattering of trees, bathed in morning light and chosen for its fresh, clean appeal. “My love story is with the organic and natural landscape of the Lowcountry of South Carolina,” Meyer explains. “I find it most beautiful when backlit by the sunrise. Spanish moss just glows and warm light wraps around the oaks and cedars. I look at it both abstractly and literally to create a variety of interpretations.”

Eugster’s love story entails impressionistic paintings of women or “country girls.” Eugster says, “She is the very embodiment of hard work, self-sufficiency, honesty and family values.” In show piece Keepin’ it Real, Eugster depicts her country girl in a self-made linen apron, and positioned her model where she felt she could be “her most spectacular self; outdoors in a large field, which is part of a farm (the tractor on the horizon), holding a bucket and work gloves. She’s not just a pretty face but a hard worker.”Carlos San Millán, Studio Corner #5, oil on board, 27½ x 21"

Eugster also embarks on a journey of change with her recent works. “My recent work is a little bolder, a little less traditional,” she explains. “I think I’ve become bored with traditional, wanting to push these images out of the realm of what one might actually see, to how it feels to be inside that painting.”

Jones, known for her vessel still life paintings, has also made changes for her show work. “I have traditionally stayed within certain color palettes and parameters,” Jones say, “but as I have been revisiting this subject matter, I find myself wanting to tweak and experiment with it to keep things exciting. I chose a brighter pastel color palette for this collection that feels energized and unexpected in contrast to the more traditional subject matter.”Kathleen Jones, Pinkie’s Palm, mixed media on canvas, 48 x 36"

As in her piece Pinkie’s Palm, there is definitely a pleasant energy that exudes from the large vessel she’s depicted, with her usage of bright pink for the palm, blues and greens from the imagery on the pot, set against a bright blue background.

Needless to say, Love Story is sure to put a smile on your face. The show, running from June 4 to 25, offers refuge from the chaos of today’s world, and envelopes you in warm arms. —
