Wintertime Showcase

Gallery Henoch’s Holiday Group Show features new paintings by its roster of gallery artists.

A range of artwork varying in style, medium and subject matter will be on display and available for purchase during Gallery Henoch’s Holiday Group Show. The exhibition includes paintings by Richard Combes, John Evans, Janet Rickus, Steve Smulka, Eric Zener, Kevin Palme, Sharon Sprung, Eric Wert, and more. The artwork represents the artists’ signature styles and subjects, ranging from figures to still lifes to street scenes.Eric Zener, Illumination, oil on canvas, 60 x 90"

Zener’s painting Illumination is from his series of works depicting figures in bodies of water. “When underwater we escape the natural place above, and can often find a quiet state of peace and tranquility,” Zener shares. “The buoyancy and sensations of the body and mind are a respite from the trappings of daily life.”

Impermanence #1, by Palme, is a still life of ice cubes stacked one on top of the other. Describing the series, he says, “The most straightforward idea behind the paintings of ice cubes is meditation on water, something precious and necessary for life but that we might take for granted. And at their core, the works are memorials—the remembrance of something impermanent. While much of our lives feels constant, we are surrounded by transience. Like ice to water, we are moments in flux between states of matter.”Richard Combes, Early Morning in the City, oil on canvas, 48 x 36"

Kevin Palme, Impermanence #1, oil on canvas, 76 x 66"

In Four Polka Dot Cups, Rickus depicts four polka dot cups that she borrowed from her next-door neighbor to serve as the starting point for the composition. It is from her Borrowed series of around 20 paintings, so far, which stems from an idea that came to her “six or seven years ago in which I borrow an object from a friend, neighbor or relative,” Rickus explains. “The borrowed object in the painting creates an added intimacy for me.”Janet Rickus, Four Polka Dot Cups, oil on canvas, 14 x 22"

Steve Smulka, Endless Sky, oil on linen, 18 x 26"

Combes’ Early Morning in the City is an empty street scene, with just a few items left behind, but showing the quiet and peace that comes before many begin their days. Smulka often paints glass jars grouped together in different arrangements and lighting; his painting Endless Sky sets these everyday objects against a wintery landscape. All of the reflections and colors are captured through and around the glass.

Holiday Group Show will hang through January 30 at the New York gallery. —
