Colorful Expressions

Rochon is the Third Prize winner of International Artist magazine’s Challenge No. 118, Abstract/Experimental Art

Artist Louie Rochon spent 20 years exploring watercolor, sculpture and fine art macro photography—even being known for his sensual photos “of all things floral”—before discovering his true passion of abstract expressionist painting at age 62. Rochon’s artwork takes all turns within the abstract realm, but is defined by his own unique style featuring bold colors and flowing lines that convey joy, hope and positivity.Birds of a Feather, acrylic and ink on hand stretched canvas, 44 x 72"

“I paint on the floor, on vast sheets of white canvas, music blaring, on my hands and knees, wet, fast and free, often for days at a time—and it ends as sudden as it starts, always taking me by surprise,” says Rochon. “It’s a deeply emotional ‘trance-dance’ of sorts, and when the music stops, I’m utterly and completely spent—I ‘am’ within my paintings.”Ovation, acrylic on canvas, 24 x 30"

Rochon has found the abstract expressionist style to be particularly freeing, and he explains how bipolar disorder affects his obsession and addiction to work. “It’s taken a lifetime to find a way to fully express myself, through a medium in which I am totally free to explore all aspects of my thoughts, feelings and emotions,” he says. “Through acrylic abstract and expressionist painting, I’m able to express the world around me at a pace that can keep up with the rapid cycling and depth of my emotions and moods of bipolar disorder and chronic depression, a lifelong challenge.”  —
