During Bonhams’ May 22 American Art auction, an artist world auction record was set for Stephen Hannock’s The Oxbow, for Lane Faison with Betty and Agnes Mongan (Mass MoCA #147). The piece was the second largest from the artist’s series that modernized Hudson River School landscapes. Hannock painted many scenes of The Oxbow, a curved portion of the Connecticut River that was first captured in oil by Thomas Cole. The work shattered its presale estimate of $30,000 to $50,000, selling at $250,075. —
