Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Nancy Switzer

Nancy Switzer’s way of approaching a canvas is guided by four key elements: design, shape, color and nuance. Each of these components resonates through her paintings to create a deep, rich, layered surface. Throughout her career Switzer has had a fascination with capturing reflections and refractions of familiar objects, and this continues to be evident when gazing upon her most recent body of work.

Claggett / Rey Gallery, Two Shots Four Ways (quadriptych), oil, 18½ x 52", by Nancy Switzer.

Claggett / Rey Gallery, Long Orange Rise, oil, 60 x 120", by Nancy Switzer.

Be it the glimmering rims of 40 glass bowls or the gradations of a monolithic wall of tin cans, she approaches these subjects with a force steeped in vibrations. The depth of color and paint create a dimensional attraction, enticing the viewer to look beyond the surface to discover she has painted the subject by painting what light bounces off it and not the item itself. Each piece emits an energy that is uniquely bold yet serene, attaining the perfect dichotomy.

Claggett / Rey Gallery, Portrait of a Sleeping Monkfish, oil, 63½ x 33½", by Nancy Switzer.

Switzer’s recent collection of work is on view at Claggett / Rey Gallery in Edwards, Colorado, and virtually through the gallery’s website. “It is a show not to be missed,” says gallery co-owner Maggie Rey. —
