Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Josef Kote

Josef Kote’s art lies in the liminal space between land and wave, reality and vision. The water, air and colors mix on the canvas, shaping fluid surfaces in which the boundaries evocatively dissolve. His views are inspired by precise places but at the same time they are archetypal, images that anyone can recognize.

“My art-making process is my obsession of getting the idea out of my brain, my state of concentration only on what is right in front of me,” says Kote. “It’s an exercise in observation and memory, a kind of mindfulness practice, not particularly a peaceful or a quiet one, as there is a lot of action during the execution of the work but getting lost in my painting.”

On July 1, an exhibition of Kote’s latest work opens at Ocean Galleries in Stone Harbor, New Jersey, with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Entitled Water, the show features 20 new paintings dedicated to the powerful element. Kote captures waves and sea foam, iridescent skies and wind in their ever-changing moods. Kote’s latest art collection is inspired by the ocean as a dominant life force—the fluid, shaping power of the water, its changing spirit and unpredictable nature.

“For me, the moment of creating is more important than the result,” Kote says. “The thing I really strive to do as an artist is to constantly experiment and engage new concepts and techniques that I’ve never tried before. I believe real creativity needs a vision, and an artist should always follow their gut feeling, stay creative and productive.” —
