Artist Focus: Chien Chung-Wei

Chien Chung-Wei is an internationally renowned watercolorist who has received many honors and awards in international competitions. In a record-breaking number of awards bestowed to a single artist, he won eight in the 16th Art Renewal Center (ARC) Salon. One of them he received from American Art Collector’s sister publication American Fine Art Magazine which honored an artist who masterfully exhibited the influence of historic American art within their submitted work.

The watercolor works of Chung-Wei appear to embrace the spirits and temperament of the Western watercolor masters over the last two centuries. He created a series of works using watercolors and gouache that looked like the romantic oil paintings of the 19th-century. His works are temperate and classic in color with masterful brushstrokes, which endow every character with a rich fullness.

“I didn’t mean to make watercolor look like oil painting, but rather, I didn’t view watercolor as the typical impression of ‘traditional watercolor,’” Chung-Wei says. “When watercolor is no longer confined to rigid notions of being thin, transparent, soft and limited to sketches or quick studies, it can (and should) allow your artistic pursuit to be boundless and on par with oil painting.”

Chung-Wei enjoys the trending popularity of contemporary art in recent years, allowing us to reconsider the pictorial value of the classic spirit in painting.

Chung-Wei’s award-winning work, Venice Symphony, will be on view in the International ARC Salon Exhibition which will be held at Sotheby’s from July 14 to July 24 in New York City.—
