Artist Focus: Tara Will

A closer look at the artwork of Tara Will

Growing up watching the creative hands of her grandmother, artist Tara Will has always been fascinated with working with her hands. “There is nothing more intuitive than having pastels in hand,” she says. “There is no extension of a brush between my hand and the paper; and there is an immediacy that I thrive on.” Will creates work that focuses on capturing the essence of the subject. She enjoys a wide range of subjects, but her focus is landscapes—a result of her love of being outdoors.Warmth Reflected, soft pastel, 26 x 20"

“Through the imperfect hand of humanity, I share the energy of the landscapes I have had the privilege to see,” Will says. “Color, value and mark-making are the integral aspects of my work. I don’t seek to disguise reality with a saccharin, romantic veil of perception. I honor the authenticity of self through the fingerprint of mark-making.Light Around the Bend, soft pastel, 26 x 20"

“I am attracted to extreme light and shadow for a reason,” continues the artist. “They inherently make the other exist—accentuating and informing. I love seeing the process and human hand of the artist. There is something refreshing about an artist putting down marks in a direct, unapologetic way. It might on occasion showcase the tendencies for human error, but that voice is what makes art unique and worth enjoying.”Coastal Terrain, soft pastel, 26 x 20"Will’s art will be featured in the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale in Denver, Colorado, which runs December 8, 2022, through January 22, 2023. —
