Artist Focus: Sandhya Sharma

A closer look at the artwork of Sandhya Sharma

Artist Sandhya Sharma paints to record moments of beauty that enrich lives. “As I have lived a life of an expat for over 20 years, I like to take note of sights that leave lasting impressions on my mind as I journey through different places and different ‘climes and times,’” says the artist. “The journey thus recorded in a painting is complete for me when a viewer has participated.”Stillness by the Flume, oil on linen panel, 14 x 18"

Sharma paints from life and plein air on location. Sharma cites Orientalist painters Alexandre Roubtzoff and Étienne Dinet as influences, as well as impressionism and classical painting. Sharma was inspired to paint Aspens Glow, Estes Park, while in the Colorado national park on an early summer morning. She watched the morning light slowly getting brighter as it filtered through the aspens. “It danced through the branches and landed ahead of me in cool patterns,” she recalls. “It was a delightful sight and had to be recorded on the canvas.”Aspens Glow, Estes Park, oil on linen panel, 16 x 12"

Stillness by the Flume was created during a day spent at Flume Falls in New York’s Adirondack Mountains which she found filled with beautiful sounds and images. “Having painted St. Regis Falls the previous day, I was looking for a quiet spot to observe the waterfall and the stream,” she says. “I found the stillness of the rocks amidst the stream very appealing.” —
