Artist Focus: Kim Eshelman

A focus on the artwork of Kim Eshelman

Ever since winning first place in a second-grade art contest, artist Kim Eshelman has been experimenting with new methods of creating. As a teenager she worked abstractly on very large canvases, but over time, as she’s grown more introspective, so has her work. She lived for many years in the Seattle area before moving to a rural region of Washington close to where she was raised. Her body of work has progressively veered toward landscapes, and it’s been like coming home both figuratively and literally. She says, “What began as an intense desire to express myself evolved into an aspiration to evoke emotions and a feeling of our connection with nature in others.” Still of the evening, pastel, 12 x 16"

A day well spent, pastel, 24 x 18"Eshelman has steadily gravitated toward working solely with pastels. “The immediacy of using dry pigment appeals to my restless personality,” she says. “It gives me the ability to combine the aesthetics of drawing into my work. I love slashing in hatch marks or allowing the underlying armature to become part of the finished painting. Having the pigment directly in hand removes a layer of distance between myself and the painting.”Looking up, pastel, 16 x 12"

Eshelman’s work is represented by galleries across the United States and is in private and public collections worldwide. Her current exhibition at Cole Gallery in Edmonds, Washington, is on view through this November 30, and she’s been invited to exhibit her work at the Pastel Museum in Saint-Aulaye, France, from July 23 to August 21, 2022. —
