Artist Focus: Daud Akhriev

A focus on the artwork of Daud Akhriev

Though Daud Akhriev’s training is rooted firmly in academic traditions, the artist strives to move away from being an imitation of the past. Instead, he focuses on using his training to create something contemporary, yet respectful of the best of our predecessors.Preparations, oil on linen, 74 x 157". Travel is a major inspiration for the artist. “New places and cultures sharpen my understanding of familiar territory and widen my understanding of the human experience,” he says, with hard workers being one of his favorite themes to explore. “I’m drawn to fishermen, carpenters, rug makers, shopkeepers; people who take the time to create something well-made. Some of my recent work considers how people can retain their integrity despite chaos and anxiety all around.”View from Ponte de Piscina, oil on linen, 39 x 47". Courtesy Gallery 1261, Denver, CO.

Akhriev works from life, creating drawings and painted sketches. In the studio, he refines these ideas using the materials he’s assembled, as well as imagination and some limited photography. “One of the great benefits of a Russian Academic education is the freedom to draw from imagination,” he adds. Akhriev’s work is currently on view in the International ARC Salon exhibition at European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona, Spain, through December 12. —
